Water, Climate and Threatened Biodiversity

Brazil has 7,676 species threatened with extinction — and 84% of them are plants, not animals.

The Environment Ministry's official threatened-species list, the National Water Agency's reservoirs and telemetry, INMET's weather stations and INPE's fire monitoring together form the environmental nervous system of the Brazilian state. Each measures an isolated dimension — species, water, climate, fire — but cross-referencing them reveals an attention bias: public debate on biodiversity is almost entirely about charismatic fauna, while most at-risk species in the country are plants nobody photographs.

84% of Brazil's threatened species are plants

The official list holds 7,676 species threatened with extinction: 6,418 plants and 1,258 animals. That is, for every threatened animal there are five plants in the same condition. The disproportion is not a counting artefact — it reflects both Brazil's extraordinary botanical diversity and the fact that plants, being immobile, are eliminated along with their habitat whenever it is converted, with no possibility of escape. The contrast with public attention is stark: conservation campaigns, institutional mascots and news coverage concentrate on mammals, which number just 103 species, 1.3% of the threatened total.

For every animal threatened with extinction in Brazil, five plants are in the same situation — and almost none of them has a familiar common name.

Fish lead threatened fauna; mammals are 8%

Within fauna, the hierarchy also contradicts common perception. Fish are the most threatened group, with 388 species (30.8%), followed by terrestrial invertebrates (275) and birds (263). Mammals, which dominate conservation communication, number 103 species — 8.2% of threatened fauna. Fish and invertebrates together total 760 species, 60% of the whole, and are precisely the groups with the least public visibility and the least investment in taxonomic research, suggesting the real figure may be higher: what has not yet been described cannot be declared threatened.

Fish and invertebrates make up 60% of Brazil's threatened fauna — and receive the smallest share of public attention and conservation budget.

322 species critically endangered, 45 already lost

Classifying fauna by risk level, 465 species are vulnerable, 425 endangered and 322 critically endangered — the category immediately preceding extinction. Beyond those, 36 are critically endangered and possibly already extinct, 6 are officially extinct, 3 extinct in the wild and 1 regionally extinct. Together, 46 Brazilian species have already been lost or are possibly lost. The figure is rare for being affirmative: a state admitting, in an official registry, the definitive disappearance of species under its jurisdiction.

Explanatory hypotheses

The predominance of plants on the threatened list has a direct ecological cause: vegetation does not migrate when habitat is suppressed, so any area conversion — for pasture, soy, mining or urban growth — eliminates entire populations at once, while mobile animals can at least relocate to remaining fragments. Fish leading the fauna, in turn, points to the effect of damming, siltation and basin pollution, pressures acting on species confined to specific water systems. And the relatively low count of threatened aquatic invertebrates and amphibians probably reflects a knowledge gap rather than safety: understudied groups appear less on lists because data to assess them is missing.

Public policy implications

If 84% of threatened species are plants, conservation policies centred on protected areas for charismatic fauna poorly protect the bulk of at-risk biodiversity — the alternative is prioritising areas by botanical endemism. The concentration of threatened fish argues for treating dam licensing and riparian forest restoration as biodiversity policy, not merely water-resource policy. And expanding funding for invertebrate and amphibian taxonomy is a precondition for knowing the real scale of the problem: today the country declares threatened only the fraction of its biodiversity it has had time to catalogue.
